Brazil general election --- First round results

Articles found in New York Times and Bloomberg

The first round of the presidential election was held on 7 October 2018. Jair Bolsonaro, who is lately being referred to as the Trump of the Tropics won 46% of the vote. Fernando Haddad won 29.3%. Which means that it will go to a second round.

Since the election of Trump there has been a steady rise of right wing populism throughout the world. and Brazil's Bolsonaro is another case. There are many things about the Brazilian election that are distinctive for Brazil. The Car Wash Scandal, initially investigated as a money laundering operation, has become one of the largest corruption investigations in the country's history. in addition to this the Brazilian economy appears to have stalled. The city of Rio de Janeiro declared bankruptcy after the Olympics, due to excessive spending and mismanagement. Unemployment is also on the rise. So corruption and econimic issues have become important electoral issues.

Bolsonaro has made several pronouncements against women, homosexuals, black and coloured ethnic groups. The more objectional of them have been labeled "hate speech". He has attracted support from the US alt-right. In addition to this the prevalence of fake news and Bolsonaro's use of Twitter and Facebook, have resulted in the inevitable comparisons with Trump.
